NEWS ITEM
1.      Definition of News Item :
News item is a text which informs readers about events of the day. The events are considered newsworthy or important. (News item is a text that gives information about the incident / event daily).
2.      Social Function of News Item :
To inform readers or listeners about events of the day which are considered newsworthy or important.
3.      Generic Structure of News Item :
a.         Newsworthy Event
à is what event happened which considered as newsworthy. Commonly newsworthy event is a place in the first paragraph. Newsworthy event tells the main event in a summary form.
b.         Background Events / Elaboration
à Can be the detail information of the stated newsworthy event or the outside background which closely relates to newsworthy event.
à Elaborate what happened, tell what caused the incident. It can be a background, participant, time, and place relating to the news.
c.          Source
à is the closing statement which can be from the participants, witness, or the official authorities.
4.      Language Feature of News Item :
       a.  Using Action Verb.
         Example : hit, attack
       b.  Using Saying Verb.
         Example : said, added, claimed
  c.  Using Passive Sentence.
Example : Aceh was hit by Tsunami in 2004.
d.  Use of adverbs in passive sentences.
    Example : The victims were badly injured.;

  Fire Damaged Shopping Center YONKERS
                                
{Newsworthy Event}
 A four alarm fire damaged 14 stores today in the Cross County Shopping Center, the largest shopping, the largest shopping center in Westchester County.

{Background Events}
          
Two fire investigators said the blaze apparently started in a pile of cardboard cartons at the rear of a shoe store and spread through a utilities duct above the 13 other stores. The fire started at 4.40 p.m. and was declared under control at 6.14 p.m. The center is on the Cross County Parkway at the Gov. Thomas E. Dewey Thruway.

     Five fire-fighters were busy at the scene.Lieut. John Carey of the Yonkers Arson Squad said the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Key Answer:
1.)    EARTHQUAKES STRIKE INDONESIA
Two large earthquakes struck near Indonesia earlier this week on Wednesday. The first earthquake occurred off the coast of Sumatra and measured 8.6 on the Richter scale. After the first earthquake, many were worried that it would cause a tsunami in the Indian Ocean. Thankfully there wasn’t one and the tsunami alert was canceled. A second earthquake struck the west coast about two hours later. The second earthquake was a magnitude 8.2 quake. Although no one died as a result of injuries from the earthquakes themselves, five people did die from other causes. Three people died from heart attacks and the other two died of shock. No one reported any major damage.




2.) LANDSLIDE IN BUKIT TINGGI

Two people died while four others were wounded in a landslide at a yard behind a house near Teleng market in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra on Tuesday. The death people were 3-year-old Yusuf, who was the son of a kiosk owner at the market, Bujang, and 22-year-old Meli, who was a visitor to the market. The injured were rushed to the Achmad Muchtar and Yarsi hospitals. Bukittinggi Deputy Mayor Ismet Amziz said Tuesday it was suspected that recent heavy rainfall had caused the landslide.

After reading above example of news item text, it is clearly that news item text is written to inform the newsworthy. It is socially important to know that there was an accident of landslide in Bukittinggi which caused two people died.
Additionally the generic structure of above news item is as follow:
1.  Newsworthy event: News item text presents the daily newsworthy. In this example of news item text, the first paragraph is the main event. It informs the reader that a landslide happened.
2.  Elaboration: The second paragraph of this example of news item gives further explanation about the main event that the two victim were 3 and 22 years old while the injured were brought to hospitals.
3.  Resource of information: The last paragraph is the official statement from the expert or the authority which strengthen the news of the main event.
